64” UTV Comparison
With Polaris’ recent announcement of their 2020 Polaris RZR Pro XP, it was time to take a look at the specs and compare, on paper, how Polaris’ new 64” high performance UTV compares to it’s closest rival, the Can Am Maverick X3 X ds Turbo RR. At 64”, these two machines are wide enough to handle extreme long-travel high-horsepower performance, while remaining narrow enough to still negotiate the trails in most locations.
The new RZR Pro XP Ultimate checks in with 181hp, raising the performance bar from their former “Horsepower King”, the 72” wide, 168hp RZR XP Turbo S. Still, with the 13hp increase, on paper the RZR Pro XP still falls 14hp short of the Can Am Maverick X3 X ds Turbo RR’s 195hp. Both machines deliver power through turbo-charged four-stroke engines linked to automatic CVT transmissions. The Polaris utilizes their 925cc twin cylinder ProStar, while the Can Am relies on their 900cc three cylinder Rotax powerplant.
The RZR Pro XP Ultimate comes standard with Fox 2.5 Podium internal bypass shocks with Live Valve, which allows the shock dampening to be electronically controlled on the fly via Polaris’ exclusive Dynamix 2.0 system. The Maverick X3 X ds Turbo RR also uses Fox 2.5 Podium shocks, but they require manual adjustment. Still, the Maverick’s Fox shocks have both high and low speed compression, as well as rebound dampening. The rears also feature a bottom-out control.
Both the Polaris and the Can Am use double a-arm front suspension, with the Can Am also incorporating a front sway bar. Out back, to deliver long-travel and durability, both the Can Am and Polaris incorporate their own version of a four-link trailing arm with a rear sway bar to reduce roll.
The Can Am Maverick X3 X ds Turbo RR features 29” Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires wrapped around 14” cast aluminum beadlock wheels. The Polaris RZR Pro XP Ultimate, on the other hand, uses larger 30” Maxxis Carnivore tires, however the 14” wheels are just standard, non-beadlock wheels.
As far as additional creature comforts go, the $3500 premium you’ll pay for the Polaris RZR Pro Ultimate not only gives you Dynamix 2.0, it also offers the Ride Command 7” display, Bluetooth connectivity, in-vehicle communication capability, and Rockford Fosgate audio.
With these performance UTV’s providing more performance, more features, and greater durability year after year, it’s amazing to imagine where we’ll be five years from now!
